Ian Dowe

Ian Dawe Born 1915 Finley NSW ……. “Bloody well live it!” When I arrived to meet Ian, at his nursing home in Berrigan, he was in the main eating area having dinner with the other residents. It was so very quiet, it took me back to when my dad was in a nursing home and bought with it some pangs of sadness. These feelings passed when I met Ian, at 102 years young Ian’s cheeky persona was so impressive. I was sure he was going to have some amazing yarns to spin and he sure didn’t disappoint. Ian was born and raised in Finley NSW, one of 5 boys. He recalls having a very good upbringing and a wonderful mother (Maggie Dawe). He fondly remembered cooking in the kitchen with his mum and each Monday i

Margaret Post

Margaret Jean Post Born 1927 Wagga Wagga NSW ……. “Where there is a will, there is a way!” Crediting her family as her inspiration, Margaret’s secret to living life to the fullest is absolutely, undoubtedly, “Happiness and family”. She also claims she never drank, smoked, gambled or went out with bad men, sounds like a very sensible approach to life indeed. Her favourite inspirational quotes on life include, “Where there is a will, there is a way” and “Will in you, you can do”. An incredibly keen, and skilled seamstress, Margaret told me of her love of sewing and proudly boasted that her most memorable moment was being crowned as the State CWA winner for a baby’s dress that she had lovingly s

Beth McMeeken

Beth McMeeken & Roy Chaplin Born 1939 & 1941 respectively Jerilderie NSW ……. “Work worth doing is worth doing well!”-Beth Beth and her partner Roy have an incredible home together in the main street of Jerilderie. Having both been previously married the pair have combined their collections of art and furniture. As I entered their home I was transported to a previous time together, they have curated a space worthy of a museum collection. Both Beth and Roy are incredibly proud of what they have created, so much so that they open their home by appointment to show off the rooms which reflect a time long gone, even the modern-day television was tucked away inside a piano. The warmth of this gorge

Betty Thompson

Betty Thompson Born 1927 Tumbarumba NSW ……. “Do the right thing and take care of yourself!” It was a hot and windy afternoon, the retirement village flag was flapping in the courtyard and the buzzers were running hot from the resident’s rooms, then along came Betty. Betty is such a soft, kind soul and it took her no time to open-up and tell me all about the life she has lived. Betty was born at home in Tumbarumba in 1927. Betty went on to marry ‘Lance’ and together they raised 4 children. In Betty’s words her inspiration in life has always been, “Belonging to the Lord, getting on the right path in life and trying to help people through, kindness and care”. She heralds the secret to living l

Kevin Cooke

Kevin Cooke Born 1931 Nowra NSW ……. “Love to have a beer with Kevin, Kevin’s my mate!” Born in Nowra in 1931, Kevin had 3 brothers, he told me however 2 of them are up in heaven. At 26 Kevin was married to Noleen at the Nowra Church of England, they had 2 sons and Kevin is now a great grandfather to 8. Kevin started working back in 1946 and by 1976 had borrowed the tidy sum of $40,000 from the Commonwealth Bank to purchase the local Ampol Service Station. Kevin was clearly proud to tell me that he was still driving and wanted me to guess his age. At 86 years young Kevin spoke of his love for horses, particularly the trots, and his passion for music, notably guitar. This was evident when I ar

Finley Dawe

Finley Dawe Born 1918 Finley NSW ……. “No takeaway meals in my life-NEVER!” Still living in his own home, Finley came across as a very proud man. His home was neat, warm and welcoming and had a real retro feel, especially the amazing original orange floral wallpaper in the kitchen. Finley was in fact born in the town of Finley and seemed disappointed as he explained that you can no longer have a baby in the town. Finley spoke fondly of his childhood and told me “My family were so good, they socialised in teams. It was a plain upbringing really. My family came here from Port Fairy and moved to Tatura before settling in Finley in 1910. His parents taught him to be ‘well behaved’ & not to start

Joan Baldwin

Joan Baldwin Born 1931 Temora, New South Wales "Always be content with what you have" Joan's life philosophy was to try her best to do the right thing always. She recalled a happy childhood on the farm; never going hungry, and valued her relationship with her parents and husband, and their children above all else. Joan placed her faith not only in family, and good friends, but in God also, striving to always help others. She declared the 1950s and 60s some of the best years of her life; courting, attending picnics, dances and balls, "dressing up and having a fabulous time!"
